Chicago ranks as the nation’s 6th largest market for the biggest use of Apple’s three top products: the iPhone, the iPod and Mac computers. The only surprise, in my view, would be that Chicago didn’t rank higher. The survey comes from Experian Simmons; here’s a link to the report.
In my travels around the Windy City — I’m a mobile worker often spotted at the independent coffee shops in the Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village and East Village neighborhoods — 90 percent of the laptop users are sporting Macs. I’ve noted this trend and tweeted about it, even.
But my “data” changes significantly when I work at a Starbucks, Panera Bakery or another chain spot. (I recommend Panera, by the way, for group meetings. Free Wi-Fi and decent food. Starbucks, for some reason, requires you to be an AT&T customer to get free Wi-Fi. Boo!) At these places, the ratio of Mac to PC users is closer to 50 percent, with PC users often coming in first.
Any thoughts about this curious coffee shop discrepancy?
